Loveland Castle

While waiting for Baby #3 to arrive, my mother-in-law and I took Hulk and Little Viking Girl to visit an ACTUAL Castle.

Sort of.

I had mentioned wanting to visit Loveland Castle to family members a few times so I was really excited to be able to check it off of my bucket list.

The castle was named Château Laroche by its architect and builder, Harry D. Andrews, in 1920. The castle was built by hand with stones from the Little Miami river and from cement bricks that Andrews formed from quart milk cartons. He spent the last 50 years of his life building the castle.

There is a short film documentary in one of the side rooms that details Andrews's life and motivation for building the castle (essentially he was a medieval enthusiast and had been stationed in France during WWI). He also lived by himself in the castle, having no family, and the occasional group of drunks would come and "raid" the castle.

The castle was much smaller than I had anticipated. There is a dungeon, a main floor receiving room with a throne for visitors to sit on, spiraling staircases, a banquet room, a bedroom, a chapel of sorts, and a circular room in one of the towers that is ornamented with swords.

The grounds surrounding the castle are very beautiful with several types of flowers.

We enjoyed the experience and at $5 per person (with children under 5 years free) I thought it was worth the trip.

It was especially worth it for this picture of Hulk and Little Viking Girl ❤❤
