Today is National Redhead Day!We celebrated by voting ;)
We love this girl (and not just for her hair color).
Redheads run in our family. J was a redhead until he turned 25 and then his hair darkened to a brown. His older sister was a redhead but her hair lightened to a blonde. My dad was a redhead but has browned like J. It's interesting how some genes can be turned on and off over time.
When I was in high school I tried bleaching my hair blonde, it turned auburn instead.
Hulk is blonde (I think he will darken to a brunette over time). But I often joked that I only married J for his hair color and that after we married his hair changed and he gave me a blonde son. We were not going to have any more kids unless I got a redhead. When Little Viking Girl was born, our family members called and texted us to express their congratulations but they didn't want to know how I (or the baby) was doing. Everyone wanted to know what color her hair was.

Every time we go out, we receive comments on her hair. The majority of them are good - people exclaiming at how beautiful it is. Some people will jokingly ask if they can take her home. -.- Right now she tolerates and even seems to appreciate the attention. She recognizes that people are talking about her hair and she'll pat her head and say, "thank you!"
It's really cute.
I worry that she won't always appreciate the attention and that she'll intentionally change her hair color when she gets older. It's her hair, so she can do whatever she wants with it but I think it's beautiful and I hope that she feels the same way.
There is a small majority of people who are rude when commenting on her hair color. I've been told that red hair is God's way of giving people a warning label or that because she has red hair she is more closely related to neanderthals (genetically, that's not even possible and it suggests that J and I are neanderthals which I take offense to).
As I mentioned, J, his sister, and my dad are all redheads (or were growing up). They are some of the most laidback, nice, easy going people I know. The idea that they need a warning label because they anger easily or are wild is laughable. We love our little red head. 🖤
