PDX Carpet: The blog post you did not ask for because you did not want it

For Oregon locals, whenever we (should I use the term we here since we now live in Cincinnati??) fly through the Portland International Airport (PDX) we take a picture of our feet.

The point of the picture isn't our stylish sock and sandal shoe wear, the point is the carpet.

It's unique. It's ugly to the point that it's cool. And Oregonians are so proud of it, there is even a wikipedia post, an online store, and several Etsy sites. My favorite is the leggings.

The original carpet was put in during the 1980s and had the bright teal that was characteristic of that time period. The designers wanted to create something iconic the could represent the Northwest (but at this point I'm just word vomiting from that wiki post I linked).

What ever its original intent, my family uses it as a way to let each other know that we've made it through security and are on our way out or that we've gotten off the plane when on our way into Oregon.

It's a fun tradition.
